SEARCH INSTRUCTIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

General characteristics

Herla offers two search options:

General search
Category Search

In order to perform a search, it is necessary to fill in at least one search field provided by the chosen option and then click on SEARCH.

Search Field

General Search
The fields included in this option are displayed by means of a label (clicking on it, its description is shown) and a box that can be filled in with the chosen terms.
If a multiple term search is performed the file list displayed will be narrowed down to documents containing only all the terms searched.

Category Search
The fields included in this option are displayed by means of a label and a small box to be ticked by clicking on it.
If more than an entry is selected the file list displayed will be narrowed down to documents relating to all the categories chosen.

Useful search tips

General search
  • All information in square brackets is not explicitly mentioned in the document; it is to be considered a likely assumption.

  • The names of letter senders and addressees are included both in the field Titolo and either in that of Comici or that of Persone Notevoli.

  • Actors are inserted by name and surname in the field Comici, including the stage name (if known) in round brackets; for actresses the husband’s name is also included, e.g.. Tristano Martinelli (Arlecchino), Virginia Ramponi/Andreini (Florinda), etc.
This field usually includes only professional actors of the Commedia dell’Arte. All the other performers are found in the field Persone notevoli (e.g.: musicians, singers, occasional actors, etc.).

  • When the dating of a document is incomplete, a probable reference time span is indicated.

  • The S-marked call number refers to printed books. We decided to attribute such pressmark to entire printed volumes, and therefore their cataloguing file consists of the description of the volume. In such file we don’t mention categories or keywords; this happens in the internal volume cataloguing instead. That is to say: Cataloguing each volume (e.g. S6) implies producing a number of files considering several fragments related to different spectacular events (e.g. files such as L101, L102, L103, L104, etc.). The references will be found in the field Note (notes).

  • When evidence shows that the dating of a document follows a Venetian or Florentine usage, the date is included in the Note field with the commentary “more veneto” or “more fiorentino”. On the file the real date is included instead.

  • The cooperating scholar who has given the document to the Foundation will be referred to by an abbreviation in the field “Note".

F.A.Q.

1) I’m not sure about the right spelling of a person’s name.
The spelling of people’s names not being standardised, we suggest trying all the possible variants, or typing only part of the name in order to obtain a selection of files including all such variants. The same solution can be adopted for foreign words or names.
Moreover, sovereigns are usually referred to by their title (e.g: “Duca di Mantova”, “Re di Francia”, “Imperatore”).

2) What do the keywords refer to?
The most relevant words in the pertinent document section. When a category includes a certain term, such term is not repeated.

3) The file doesn’t seem to be complete
Some files may be incomplete because their cataloguing is still in progress. In documents with an “S” call number no categories or keywords are included.
