PRESENT STATE OF THE PROJECT:
LATEST INVESTIGATIONS, RESEARCH LINES
 |
Francesco Bertelli
"Maschare da Ebrei" (Jewish Masks) |
These are some of the events and figures we have already
collected and inventoried archive material about:
- 1566-1567: two rival companies acting in Mantua, lead by two women, Flaminia and Virginia
- 1563-1590: relationships between the Jewish community and the Court; letters by the Accademici Invaghiti
- 1582: marriage of Ferdinand of Austria and Anna Caterina Gonzaga
- 1584: celebrations in honour of Duchess Margherita
Gonzaga/D’Este at Modena
- 1584-1620: Battista Guarino’s Il Pastor Fido, stage productions and reception
- 1591: Carnival in Mantua, with spectacular events testified by a remarkable amount of payment bills
- 1600-1614: nearly continuous activities performed by Italian actors in Paris, testified by Hôtel de Bourgogne leases. An interesting topic is the association between Italian and French actors.
- 1607-1608: marriage of Francesco Gonzaga and Margherita of
Savoy.
- 1614-1629: Italian acting companies at the Imperial Court
(Wien, Prague)
- 1622: marriage of Eleonora Gonzaga and Ferdinand II of Habsburg.
At the present moment the research is focussing on the decades between the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century (1570-1630), from a chronological point of view, while from a thematic standpoint it is focussed on the relationships and exchanges concerning spectacular matters between the Gonzaga Court and the Imperial Court.
At this stage of the project we have started to involve scholars cooperating in the research and collection of materials in archives or library outside Mantua. The requirements are a basic knowledge of archive work, of manuscript reading (XVI and XVII century) and of theatre history.
